Should I buy travel insurance for Panama?

Yes. Always. Here is everything you need to know.

The honest answer

Panama does not legally require travel insurance for entry, but every experienced traveller, travel professional and medical expert who knows this country will tell you the same thing: buy it before you fly, without exception.

Panama's private hospitals in Panama City are excellent, two are accredited by the Joint Commission International, the same US-based accreditation body that certifies American hospitals. But they require payment upfront, and the costs for serious treatment can be significant. Your home country's health insurance almost certainly does not cover you here.

Outside Panama City, medical facilities are more limited. In remote destinations like San Blas, Bocas del Toro or the highlands of Boquete, reaching adequate medical care can require evacuation by air or sea, which without insurance can cost tens of thousands of dollars. A comprehensive travel insurance policy costs a fraction of that. It is the smartest investment you will make for your trip.

Panama's most beautiful destinations, San Blas Islands, Bocas del Toro, Volcán Barú, are hours from the nearest major hospital.

Hours from the nearest hospital

San Blas (Guna Yala)

There are no full-service hospitals on the islands. Serious cases require evacuation by boat and ground transport or, in some cases, helicopter to Panama City.

Bocas del Toro

There are clinics and a regional hospital for routine care, but major trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac care, or ICU cases often require transfer to Panama City.

Volcán Barú

The mountain itself is remote. Although Boquete and David have medical facilities, a rescue from the mountain can take hours depending on your location and the weather.

A serious injury or illness in these areas can require air or sea evacuation.

Especially for:

  • severe hiking injuries
  • diving accidents
  • cardiac emergencies
  • strokes
  • serious allergic reactions
  • major boat accidents

Travel insurance providers specifically recommend medical evacuation coverage for travellers visiting Panama's islands and remote regions.

What evacuation can cost

Without insurance, this alone can cost $20,000–$100,000+ USD.

Estimates show:

Helicopter evacuation in Panama

Roughly US$10,000–25,000.

Air ambulance within Panama

Roughly US$10,000–30,000.

International air ambulance

Panama to the U.S.: US$25,000–75,000+, with some complex evacuations exceeding US$100,000.

Medical facilities in Panama, what to know

Pacifica Salud Hospital Punta Pacífica

JCI-accredited. Panama City's premier international hospital. Affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine International. English-speaking staff available.

Clínica Hospital San Fernando

JCI-accredited. One of Panama's most respected private hospitals. Comprehensive services, modern equipment, international patient services.

Outside Panama City

Facilities in David (Chiriquí) and Chitré are adequate for basic care. Rural clinics are very limited. Remote areas like San Blas have no hospitals, evacuation is the only option for serious emergencies.

Important: upfront payment required

Upfront payment required

Since 2011, foreign visitors no longer receive free medical care in Panama. All private hospital treatment requires upfront payment. Your travel insurance reimburses you after filing a claim on your return home.
